Powdr buys Copper Mountain

By Karen D. Lorentz

Powdr Corp is scheduled to buy Copper Mountain in Colorado this month. The issuance of a U.S. Forest Service special-use permit to Powdr Corp. has been approved, so if all else goes well, Killington, which Powdr acquired in 2007, could be getting another sibling by the end of December.

Powdr Corp is America’s second-largest U.S. ski-area owner/operator and the largest private ski company (Vail Resorts, the largest U.S. ski-resort company is publicly traded) based on total annual skier visits. Powdr will acquire Copper from the Vancouver, B.C.-based Intrawest, which is the largest North American operator of ski resorts in Canada and the U.S.

Copper Mountain has a lot in common with Killington. They are both sprawling areas with lots of diverse terrain, and they have historically done around the same number of annual skier visits.

Publisher's Note, December 2009

Like many states, Vermont had a later-than-normal start to winter, but not disastrous. Snow fell and the temperatures have dropped just in time to save mid-December and create some spectacular first runs. While it was thin the first weekend of December, by that next weekend (Dec. 12) two feet of powder had dropped on Mad River Glen and Sugarbush for epic days (especially Friday for those willing to hike at Mad River), and Stowe had a good portion of the Front Four open that weekend and Jay, well, it’s Jay. Killington, Okemo and Stratton have been pumping a lot of snow on their high peaks creating good conditions there, while Mount Snow has had its guns putting down feet of snow to last late into the season.
